Is the Water Safe to Drink?
One of the first questions foreigners in Mexico ask is
if it is safe to drink the water. Generally, the answer depends
on the water and where it is found. Studies have shown that up to 40% of all travelers
to
Mexico that stay at least one week in the country will end up with
diarrhea or other intestinal problems. When it comes to public
water, most systems are contaminated with bacteria that can cause
havoc with foreign stomachs. Obviously, this water should be
avoided.

Most tourist-class properties
have on-site water purification systems. Look for a
sticker on your bathroom mirror about the hotel's purification
system. It is also common for bottles of purified
water to be left in bathrooms. When you see this, it
means that the tap water is not safe for consumption.
And remember not to use the tap water to brush your
teeth!
Most restaurants that cater to foreign
visitors will provide bottled water. Many will stack
large bottles of purified water in a visible area to let you
know that the water they serve is safe to drink.
Restaurants off the beaten path may not provide bottled water.

If there is any doubt as to the purity of the water you are about to
drink, err on the side of caution and don't drink it! Visit our Staying
Healthy in Mexico page for more information.
