Located along the Sea of Cortez in the State of Sonora, Guaymas (population 135,000) is a port city about 250 miles south of the U.S./Mexico border. Just a few miles to the north of it is the tranquil beach resort town of San Carlos (population 7,000), an RV, diving and snorkeling oasis. Daily flights from the U.S. and a well-maintained highway from Nogales, Arizona make getting here easy, and as a result, Guaymas-San Carlos is home to many U.S. expatriates (and English is widely spoken). It can get very hot here during the summer, but the calm waters are crystal clear, warm and enticing.

Even though this area has been the shooting location for several Hollywood movies (Catch-22 and The Mask of Zorro), it remains a well-kept secret, unspoiled by development or tourist crowds. With a pretty, rugged landscape, tons of sun and plenty of excellent Guaymas-San Carlos hotels, resorts, restaurants and water activities, this seaside Paradise is perfect for sand and surf weekend getaways, quiet romantic vacations and inexpensive family trips. While Guaymas-San Carlos does not have the extensive amenities found in Cancun or some other glamorous Mexico resorts, it never-the-less manages to charm and cast a spell over its guests.

For boaters, the area boasts the largest natural marina in Latin America, with 700 slips and modern, sleek facilities. For divers, more than 800 species of colorful fish inhabit the waters offshore, and a sunken ferry, two artificial reefs and several other wrecked ships make underwater exploring here a thrilling experience.

Sport fishing in Guaymas-San Carlos is top-notch, rivaling the waters of Cabo san Lucas and Mazatlan. Sailfish, marlin, skyjack, snapper, whitefish and yellow tail are all in abundance during various times of the year. Guaymas-San Carlos vacationers also enjoy an 18-hole golf course.

When it comes to accommodations, Guaymas-San Carlos hotels and resorts are on the European plan which means that only the room is included in the price - everything else is an extra cost. The San Carlos Plaza Hotel Resort and Convention Center is a lovely property with 147 rooms and is the only beachside Guaymas-San Carlos hotel. Guests enjoy two restaurants, two swimming pools and a water sports center. The hotel has also hosted several Hollywood stars.

The Marinaterra Hotel and Spa is a 112-room resort located on the San Carlos marina promenade and overlooks the moored yachts and pleasure vessels. Rooms are colorfully decorated and come with air conditioning, color cable TV and a private balcony. This Guaymas-San Carlos resort also has a spa and a private beach club for its guests.

The Sea of Cortez Premier Vacation Club is an intimate resort with just 30 sea-facing suites. Marble tiled kitchens, exquisite attention to detail and understated luxury make vacationing in this wonderful property a delightful experience.

The Paradiso Resort is a budget hotel with simple but comfortable rooms. Located between Guaymas and San Carlos, this property has 375 rooms, each with an ocean or lagoon view.
