Health and Traveling in Mexico
|
Some studies have shown that up to 40% of all travelers that
stay at least one week in Mexico will end up with
intestinal troubles, and most of these people will become
ill on the third day of their visit. Most public water systems in Mexico
are contaminated with harmful bacteria, which can cause
havoc on foreign stomachs. But worrying about getting sick
is also a sure way to ruin your vacation. Use some common
sense, and you should stay healthy.
A few tips for staying well:
-
Always wash your hands before eating
-
Do not ever eat anything from open air stands
-
Drink plenty of bottled water
(and only bottled water)
-
Drink Pepto Bismal throughout your stay
-
Take it easy the first couple of days
-
Ease into local eating and drinking habits
-
Respect the almighty "Tequila God"
because he is more powerful than you

If you do become sick, Mexico has pharmacies that
dispense prescription drugs (often without prescriptions) at a
fraction of the cost of similar medicines back home. Be
aware that many of these drugs do not carry warning labels, so
you take them at your own risk.
The Mexican Ministry of Health has also launched a nationwide
program to improve and monitor food and water quality.
Those businesses who have enrolled in the program must train
their employees about food handling and adopt U.S./Canadian food
handling procedures. Food and beverage providers who
achieve excellence are allowed to display their "H"
certification. Look for it in bars and restaurants.

Some U.S./Canadian health insurance companies will provide
coverage while you are in Mexico, but most will not. If
you become seriously ill and require medical attention, Mexican doctors
and hospitals expect cash or credit card payments in advance for
services rendered. If you need air evacuation to the U.S.
or Canada, you will be expected to pay between $15,000 - $25,000
USD for your transportation. For these reasons, it is
recommended that travelers purchase inexpensive international
health insurance for your stay in Mexico.
