Hermosillo, also known as "The Sun City," is the capital of the State of Sonora and is a modern, bustling city located roughly 165 miles south of the U.S./Mexico border. Home to 650,000 people, Hermosillo is situated in the Sonoran Desert, making it one of the hottest cities in Mexico with average summer temperatures of 104° F. This desert location makes Hermosillo a winter vacation destination for many Mexicans, and it is a relatively safe metropolis.
The city dates from about 1700, and today it is home to a large number of U.S. firms, including Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Office Depots and Costco. Industrialization, particularly assembly plants, and trade with the United States contribute to the city's growing economy, and English is often heard around town. All of modern life's amenities, including fine restaurants, cultural centers, nightclubs, hotels, movie theaters, museums, well-maintained avenues and shopping centers, are in good supply.
