Experience the resorts and hotels in Mayan Riviera, Mexico
The Mayan Riviera is nestled along Mexico’s Yucatan coast and stretches from Cancun south to Punta Allen, just south town of Tulum. Sometimes called the Riviera Maya, this beautiful, mostly undeveloped section of Mexico is home to ancient Mayan ruins and stunning Playa Del Carmen beaches, and it has the Great Mayan Reef, the second largest coral reef in the world, just off its coast. Towns are few and far between, and the beaches are mostly empty, with a few fishermen and dive operators here and there.
And although this area remains remote and relatively unpopulated, more and more lavish Mayan Riviera all-inclusive resorts are popping up. Those travelers coming to Mexico for a Mayan Riviera vacation usually focus on the city of Playa del Carmen (also known as Playa) or on the town of Tulum. Here are where most all inclusive hotels and resorts are found, although Playa certainly has more of them than does Tulum.
Playa del Carmen is the place where the ferry to Cozumel docks, but with its white beaches and tranquil blue waters, this is also a favorite locale for sun bathing and diving. A mellow city with an authentic Mexican charm, Playa del Carmen is growing but is still remarkably unspoiled. Mayan Riviera all inclusive vacations can be found at the luxurious Grand Real Porto, the delightful Hacienda Vista Real and the exquisite Grand Coco Bay All Inclusive Resort.
Tulum, nearly at the southern end of the Riviera Maya, is a walled, Mesoamerican town and the site of some of Mexico’s most amazing Mayan ruins. The Tulum Ruins, as they are known, date from 1200 A.D. and are the third most visited Mayan archeological site in Mexico. When it comes to lodging in Tulum, most Mayan Riviera all-inclusive resorts found here are low-key but posh. Several of the most exclusive include the gorgeous Blue Tulum Resort and Spa, the lovely Dreams Tulum Resort and Spa and the sumptuous Hidden Beach Resort.
Mayan Riviera cruises are a popular way to visit this beautiful stretch of Mexico. These cruises generally sail year-round and start from Florida ports, including Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, and from Gulf Coast ports, such as Galveston, Texas, in the U.S., making stops in Playa del Carmen (Calica, actually). Cruises in Mexico along the Mayan Riviera give vacationers a glimpse of the lush scenery that makes up much of Mexico but is often overlooked as tourists gravitate to well-known beach resort towns and cities. Ship lines offering Mayan Riviera cruises include Carnival and Windstar.
