Aztec Mythology

All about Aztec mythology!

Aztec mythology doesn't differ much from the Greek or African mythologies. The stories were related by word of mouth, and often for the Aztecs, were a part of ceremonies and rituals, accompanied by drums, song, and dance. Other instruments made an appearance in the telling of the myths to afford them sound effects for the stories. The Aztec mythology stories had a lot to do with the gods and the things that had happened in the past. The myths and stores had been passed down for ages and ages and just like any word of mouth story, embellishments were more than likely added, but it made it all the more interesting! Aztec mythology stories also covered predictions with what is going to happen when the world ends. The Aztecs feared the world ending, thus had many predictions on what was going to happen to the world when it ended.

A lot of the Aztecs mythological stories included names of gods that are virtually unpronounceable to us today. There are still people of strong Aztec decent that can re-tell the myths of the Aztecs in their language, Nahuatl, to perfection. Aztec mythology might be one of the biggest mysteries to historians, as most of the mythological stories were not written down, except by the Spanish friars looking to take their stories and use them against the Aztecs for purposes of conversion to Catholicism. All in all, Aztec mythology is one that will still be studied for years to come, as there are always new bits and pieces and new stories that come up every now and then!
