Fiesta Of The Virgin Of Guadalupe
Everything you need to know about the Fiesta de la Virgen de Guadalupe
On December 12th, Mexicans celebrate the Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe. It is a national holiday that is celebrated by parties, food, and family gatherings. No matter what day of the week it is, all businesses are closed, and most definitely the government offices. Actually, people from all over Mexico go to the Basilica of the Virgen of Guadalupe, which is the main church of Mexico located in northern Mexico City. Some people save up all year to especially make this trip to ask the Virgen for forgiveness or to thank her for answering a prayer of theirs. There is a traditional mass, but geared toward the Lady of Guadalupe, Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe. Tons of people still go there to pay homage to her in this place, where they say she appeared to the Mexican people. The people that come to the Basilica usually bring gifts or flowers. Flowers are also used in many parts of Mexico to make beautiful flower arrangements in her likeness. As with all Mexican holidays, food is a major part of the festivities. These delicious dessert pastries called bunuelos are served a lot â€" they are flaky, crunchy, buttery pastries that have a warm honey/sugar syrup you pour on top. It is absolutely delicious. There are also raspados, which are snow cones, too. To add to the festivities, there are lots of parades, live music, and sometimes there are bullfights. The fiesta de la Virgen de Guadalupe is a big deal, even if you are not in Mexico City â€" be sure to stop in at a mass at your local church!
