Spring Equinox At Kulkulcan
The serpent descent on display at the spring equinox at the pyramid of KuKulcan at Chichen Itza is one of the reasons that it is named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Not only is this pyramid mathematically and astrologically built to perfection to create this shadow, it is just impressive to look at. The whole thing was built without the use of any sort of modern technology whatsoever. Equi means equal and —nox means night. The perfect balance of day any night twice a year causes the serpent god Qutzalcoatl to descent from heaven and onto the earth twice a year. It is believed he does this to bless the earth for health, prosperity, and good crops. He then supposedly bathes in sacred water, and passes through the earth to the underworld. This impressive show lasts a total of 5 hours, starting when the sun shines on the side of the staircase, the god slowly shows himself, and descends on the side of the pyramid, and into the earth. The whole pyramid is impressive in size, and is the largest in the series of pyramids in the area, measuring 24 meters high (78.7 feet) and 53.3 meters wide (174 feet) on each side. This is no small object! To see the spring equinox at the pyramid of KuKulcan, you will need to get there early, as crowds from all over the world come to see this phenomenon.
