Authentic Mexican Candy Recipes
I had my first taste of Mexican candy in the fifth grade when one of my now lifelong friends brought a whole bag of these chili covered watermelon suckers. I’ll never forget thinking how weird it was to mix spicy and sweet as I tried not to make a face while eating it. I was trying to be nice, and I ended up falling in love with the flavor! Mexican candy (like all candy) is something I crave on a regular basis. Instead of going to the store and always buying candy, I decided I’d find a Mexican candy recipe, and make my own authentic Mexican candies myself, so I’d never have to leave home to get some! Here is a recipe for one of my favorite Mexican candies, Leche Quemada. The literal translation is burned milk, but it’s so much better than it sounds!
Here’s what you need to get started:
- 2 large cans evaporated milk
- 5 1/2 cups sugar
- 5 1/2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
Just mix the milk, sugar, butter and salt in a large heavy pan and bring to boil.
Add brown sugar and stir until it dissolves. Continue cooking and stirring mixture over medium heat until it reaches soft ball stage. Stir until thick enough (as for fudge). Drop by teaspoonful on a buttered pan or wax paper or pour into buttered pan and cut into squares. You can top it with pecans, which I love to do, as I’m from Texas, and we love our pecans.
Enjoy this authentic Mexican candy!
