Salsa Recipes

Homemade Salsa Recipe

Salsa is to Mexican food as ketchup is to American food. Everyone should have a great salsa recipe under their belt. Store bought can’t compare with a homemade salsa. I will share with you a few of my own salsa recipes here, but feel free to add or take away whatever you think will make your salsa recipe your own!

Salsa is usually tomato based, so I will start with the easiest: salsa bandera. This one is my absolute favorite, and you can put it on absolutely everything.

  • 2 diced medium sized tomatoes
  • 1 diced onion
  • 3 diced medium/large size peppers (serrano are my chile of chioce, but you can use their milder cousin, the jalapeno) *if you can’t stand the heat, use a handful of cilantro*
  • 2 tbs lime juice
  • Salt and pepper
  • a little olive oil (optional)

You just mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, it’s that simple! I usually let the flavors meld in the fridge for about 15 minutes, and you’re good to go! Americans call this pico de gallo or salsa fresca (fresh sauce, which it is) but the correct term is salsa bandera because it contains all the colors of the Mexican flag.

To start changing this recipe, liquify all the ingredients, add garlic, a little tomato paste, and some chili powder. You could also roast the tomatoes, onion, and chile and make a roasted salsa to die for! If you don’t want the heat of the peppers, scoop out all the ribbing and seeds. You can even omit the tomatoes and add bell peppers of any color, and you could roast these as well.

This basic salsa recipe can be used alone, as a garnish, on top of enchiladas or tostadas, or for tacos! You can even top chicken or fish with it, it is so versatile. Check back often for more recipes for salsa right here on Mexico Adventure. You can also try a scrumptious black bean salsa recipe that will be the hit of the party!
