Mexico attracts tourists and vacationers from around the globe, and the majority of these travelers choose to rent a room in a hotel or in a resort during their stay. A third option, however, is to lease a Mexico vacation rental property. These furnished properties are privately owned condominiums, single family homes and villas and can be found in nearly any Mexican destination, from the lavish beach resorts to smaller villages. Mexico rental properties are available for short-term stays, just a night or a week or two, but some allow long-term stays of several months.

Mexico vacation rentals are appealing because they offer several advantages over a hotel or resort. Often, particularly in the case of single family dwellings, these residences are located in Mexican neighborhoods, providing the chance to experience the authentic Mexico. When staying in a hotel or resort, especially in an all-inclusive resort, it is easy to spend the entire vacation on property grounds and thereby miss a lot of the color, character and culture of this remarkable country.

If privacy is a concern, Mexico rental properties offer more of it than a hotel or resort where hundreds, or even thousands, of vacationers squeeze into one or two buildings, all lounging on the same beach, swimming in the same pool and eating in the same restaurants. And while most hotel rooms have coffee makers and a little refrigerator, rental properties have complete kitchens, furnished right down to the silverware.

Depending on the property, Mexico vacation rentals have more space than typical hotel accommodations. Whereas a hotel room might have a single bed or a set of beds and a bathroom, a vacation rental usually has a living area, a dining area and several bedrooms. This extra space makes them a great option when traveling with children or friends. An added perk of staying in a vacation rental is that unlike a hotel, there are no taxes (but there may be service fees), and tipping is usually not required.

Most owners who are in the Mexico vacation rental business take the business seriously, usually renting out their property continuously and reserving only a few weeks each year to enjoy it for themselves. Owners vary, but the majority are responsible, and they often provide amenities similar to that of a hotel or resort, including daily maid service and airport pick-up. Many accept credit cards. Some owners may hire a management company to take care of the rental details. This ensures quality control for both the owner and the vacationer.

Mexico condos are probably the most common type of vacation rental property. Primarily found in the tall condominium buildings in the seaside resorts, these Mexico beach rentals are in many ways similar to a hotel or a resort, but for roughly the same price, they boast the extra benefits of a kitchen, extra space and no taxes. Various cities, depending on development, boast different pricing. Cancun real estate and rentals are pricy, but offer a large return on investment for investors due to increasing popularity.

At the far end of the luxury spectrum, Mexico has some sumptuous private villas that double as vacation rentals. Located in neighborhoods in popular resort areas or in gated, secluded hideaways where tourists rarely venture, these Mexico rental properties provide the average vacationer a taste of the good life. Upscale décor, a full staff (including a chef), an activity director, a secluded beach, a private dock, a private swimming pool, a Jacuzzi and privileges at the local golf course are not uncommon. Some of the most impressive villa rental properties are situated atop spectacular cliffs, providing unmatched ocean views and a sense of grandeur that few hotels can match.
