Puerto Penasco Mexico
Located roughly four to five hours south of the Arizona border, Puerto Penasco, Mexico (known as “Rocky Point” in English) is nestled in the Sonoran Desert along the placid Sea of Cortez. It boasts a striking desert landscape, tranquil blue waters and abundant sun and for most of its existence, it was a sleepy fishing village. In the 1920s, gringos escaping U.S. Prohibition briefly made their way here, but the population remained primarily Mexican for years. In the 1990s, however, that began to change as developers eyed the tiny town for its potential as a tourism destination, citing its close proximity to the Arizona cities of Tucson and Phoenix. Today this growing seaside oasis is known as “Arizona’s beach” and is attracting not only Arizonians but tourists and vacationers from across the U.S. Puerto Penasco is within the border free zone so a passport is not needed to visit.
This is primarily a weekend getaway, and there is hardly a closer Mexican locale with as much to offer for a perfect beach vacation. The stretch of land to the north and south of town is virgin sand and only really started being developed by the Mexican government and local builders in 1993. Amenities are growing with dozens of hotels, condominiums, restaurants (and a new golf course) springing up where only patches of desert sand existed a few years ago. RVers also find plenty of places to park, often just steps from the beach. One of the nicest things about a Puerto Penasco vacation is that it offers first-rate amenities without the crowds (or prices) found in larger Mexican vacation destinations. Some of that may change, though, as the cruise line Holland America plans to make Puerto Penasco a regular stop on its itinerary starting in 2011.

Puerto Penasco continues to celebrate its fishing heritage, drawing both hobby and professional anglers seeking red snapper, whitefish, halibut and bass. Several fishing tournaments are held each season and can turn into quite a party with bands playing and lots of great food for everyone.
U.S. residents have discovered Puerto Penasco resorts not only as close, affordable vacation getaways but as a place for savvy real estate investment. Numerous beach-side housing developments, including Sandy Beach Resorts, Costa Diamante, Las Conchas, Bella Sirena, Las Palomas Resort, Sonora Sea and Las Palmas, have sprouted up and are popular with buyers in the market for a nearby vacation home or for a place to retire. Real estate prices vary but are generally less than those found in many other U.S. and Mexican beach locations.
Because of its close proximity to the U.S. and because much of the Puerto Penasco real estate is owned by U.S. citizens, English is spoken with regularity in Puerto Penasco, making it that much easier to vacation or relocate here. The residents are friendly and welcoming. The sun shines in all its glory, and life meanders at a leisurely pace. When in Puerto Penasco, snuggled against the calm waters of the Sea of Cortez, it is easy to forget all of life’s modern stresses. When in Puerto Penasco, it is easy to want to stay for a lifetime.
