Rocky Point Golf, Puerto Penasco Golfing Trips
Golf enthusiasts will love heading to Rocky Point for their holidays as Rocky Point golf is rather famous and accepted amongst golf lovers. You can find a challenging and public golf course in Rocky Point that is about a mile away from Tampa International Airport.
The interesting aspect of this golf course is that you can find sand, wind and water in every hole of the golf course. There are beautiful lakes spread across the course, which are homes to divergent and endangered water fowl.
It was in the year 1911 that the Tampa Automobile Club was opened for business. This makes this Puerto Penasco golf course one of the first golf courses of Florida. However the advent of the World War II lead to the closure of the golf course in 1942.
Available at only a dollar
This was when the golf course was turned into a part of Drew Field by the Federal Government where barracks were built to hold prisoners of war. The City of Tampa was later handed over this property by the government in the year 1953 for only a dollar.
This was when the City of Tampa leased the golf course to J.S. Curly and Merle Hartman for 25 years after which Rocky Point Golf Course was reopened in the month of June of 1954.
When Curly passed away in 1957, Merle took over its operations. A third nine was added to the golf course in December 1963. Once the lease expired in 1978, the City of Tampa handed over the responsibility of its operations to the Tampa Sports Authority.
It was later, in the month of December, 1981 that Mayor Bob Martinez leased out about forty acres of Rocky Point Golf Course to Critikon Corporation for a 99 year lease in return for a 1.2 million dollar redesign of the golf course. This is what heralded the return of the 18 holes golf course from the 27 holes golf course.
