Rocky Point Mexico Boating
Puerto Penasco gets pretty close to a post card seaside town as the Sonoran desert merges with the 700 mile Gulf of California. Once a sleepy fishing haven; today Puerto Penasco is a bustling tourist destinations that is regularly frequented by visitors from all the United States.
One of the attractions of the area is of course the Sea of Cortes; while the dainty houses have been replaced by condos and resorts; the sea has remained unchanged still nestling an abundance of marine life in its depths. This can primarily be attributed to the absence of new marinas, docks and organized marine tours. However, this does make the waters around Puerto Penasco ideal for boating.
As a matter of fact, Rocky Point Boating is among the most widely enjoyed activities in the area. The local harbor primarily caters to the shrimping vessels while the marina has a mere 30 slips at $20 a night for docking. However, the Sea of Cortes is famous for its extreme tides which make it impossible to anchor vessels in the upper reach.
It is not unusual to find boats being trailored down; the harbor does have a boat ramp and there are also a few others in town such as the RV Park in El Mirador, Playa Elegante, Cholla Bay and Playa de Oro.
The difference between a high and low tide can be quite substantial at almost 100n yards. This in turn has created a need for contraptions that can be used to ferry the vessels to the ocean. These vehicles look weird but get the job done and you only need to pay a few bucks for such services.
Several Rocky Point charters are also operated each day. The most popular route is of course a trip to the Bird Island. If you are keen on Puerto Penasco boating, another option is to take the sunset cruise. These are operated with much fanfare and offer the best way to enjoy a few hours out on the ocean as the weary sun sets into the shimmering waters.
There is certainly no dearth of Americans who flock to the town for sport fishing; the waters in the area are teeming with an assortment of marine life forms. The area has also garnered wise spread attention as a growing marine research center.
If you want to enjoy the local fauna, the best way to do so is by taking a trip to Isla San Jorge also known as Bird Island. This is a small eco system sanctuary that is off bounds for humans. However, numerous charters operate snorkeling and scuba diving trips in the area. Also, you may be able to go kayaking which can take you pretty close the island.
If you intend to sail into Puerto Penasco, you will need a boat permit which can be procured from San Diego, Ca or from Rocky point. You can purchase the permit for a month up to one year. You will also need a fishing license for everybody on board even if they do not intend to fish. These permits are checked so it’s best to carry them along; however, you do not need a permit if you are fishing from the shore.
