Rocky Point Mexico Weather & Climate
Rocky Point Mexico, also known as Puerto Penasco Mexico, is a city located about 215-miles south of the Arizona border. The city is known by two names, one in Spanish (Puerto Penasco) and one in English (Rocky Point). Rocky Point is located on the strip of land that connects the Baja California peninsula with the rest of Mexico. During the 1990s, the city of Puerto Penasco began to develop the area for tourism, although it was already heavily traveled by residents of California and Arizona. Rocky Point has been is also known as “Arizona’s Beach” for it is located closer to the cities of Phoenix and Tucson than Hermosillo and Mexicali.
The weather in Rocky Point is normally very warm. During the summer, the average temperatures are 10-20 degrees cooler than Phoenix and in the winter, they are about 10 degrees warmer. The climate is very dry with an average temperature of about 84°F but it is not uncommon for the temperature to get as high as 110°F during the summer. A normal Rocky Point weather forecast consists of extreme sun, for there is only about 2-inches of rainfall per year. While the rainiest months in the United States are April and May, in Rocky Point, they are the driest months with a rainfall average of .025-inches of rain. Although the weather in Puerto Penasco is hot, its nights are cool. Temperatures for a 100° day can dip into the 60s or 70s at night.
Because Puerto Penasco is part of the Altar and Sonora Deserts, its area is mostly sand. The Altar desert is one of the driest deserts in the world. Most of Rocky Point’s animal life and vegetation are typical for deserts such as cactus, scrub brush, small mammals, and reptiles. Farming and livestock do not exist due to the extreme dry conditions. The warm weather in Puerto Penasco make it a great place for fishing. Fishing is a very popular and profitable export of Puerto Penasco, most commonly, shrimp fishing. The land is generally flat and contains the Sonoyta mountain range to the north and east of the area.
It is not uncommon to see severe weather in a Rocky Point Weather Forecast. Although very uncommon, the area does have a chance of being hit by hurricanes. History shows that Rocky Point has only been hit by one major hurricane. In 1997, Hurricane Nora hit parts of Puerto Penasco and damaged trees, electric wires, ripped off the roofs and walls from homes.
Until the 1990s, Puerto Penasco had little tourism except for frequent vacationers from Arizona. The Rocky Point tourism center was created in 1993 with the government joining with private investors who were interested in building condominiums and other facilities along the coast. Today, 99% of the owners of these condominiums are from the United States. Americans use this as a regular vacation spot due to the warm weather in Rocky Point. Since 1993, Puerto Penasco has developed hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, RV facilities, an airport, and a golf course complex. By 2011, Holland America Line will make Puerto Penasco a port for their cruise line.
