Boating and Fishing:

Easily THE thing to do while staying in Rocky Point. Rocky Point or Puerto Penasco was once a sleepy little fishing village with a few gringos sprinkled in for good measure. And while the beaches have become crowded with condos and beach homes, the ocean is still much the same as it has always been. This is mostly because Rocky Point does not have much in the way of new harbors or marinas, nor are there many organized boating events. But Rocky Point does have one thing going for it, and that is one big gorgeous ocean right in its backyard. Welcome to the Sea of Cortez.

Most often, boats are trailored down from these states. Often the difference between high tide and low tide can be 100 yards, and because the water is shallow for quite a distance, improvised launch vehicles have been developed for the area. Perhaps the most popular boating excursion in or around Rocky Point is a trip to The Islands of San Jorge, or more commonly known as Bird Island. Located 27 miles south of town, and 11 miles from the shore, the cluster of rocks provides migrating birds, animals and fish with a rest stop as they cross the Sea of Cortez.

Visitors to the island will experience a small biological sanctuary or eco-system. On a typical day there are many types of birds, herds of sea lions, and underwater predators lurking around for a meal. Local dive shops host scuba and snorkeling trips, and there are many charters that have big and small boating trips to the island.

Modes of transportation:

ATV’s, golf carts and Jet skiing are all very popular modes of transportation in the Rocky Point area, while the areas in which one can ride ATV’s is shrinking as real estate development expands. Golf carts are an extremely popular mode of transportation around town and there are numerous bodies of water for enjoyable and stress free jet skiing.

Sunset and Dinner Cruises:

Sail a pirate ship on the high sea. This has to be one of the most fun things to do in Rocky Point. The ship’s name is the Carnaval and her captain and crew will provide you with exceptional customer service and an evening full of fun and excitement while taking in the beautiful scenery of the Sea of Cortez waters and its surrounding areas.

Snorkeling and Diving:

With over 900 islands and many more volcanic coves and waters filled with thousands of marine species, the Northern part of the Sea of Cortez has become one of the most diverse and beautiful snorkeling and diving locations in the world.
