Cozumel is Mexico's largest inhabited island and is a serene, laid-back place but with some of the country's best hotels and certainly some of its most stunning beaches.  Until just a few years ago this resort was known as a cruise ship port-of-call and a Mecca for hardcore scuba divers.  Today, Cozumel is attracting more families, eco-tourists and honeymooners.

This Caribbean island's allure is due in part to its combination of friendly people, great dining and more affordable prices than in neighboring Cancun.   New resorts are popping up, and air service has improved, making Cozumel even more appealing.   Sightseeing opportunities include visiting more than 35 archaeological sites, viewing giant sea turtles laying their eggs (May to September) and visiting the city of  San Miguel, a charming  hodgepodge of cafes, shops and restaurants.

Cozumel's lodging includes 5 star resorts, 3 star properties and rustic bungalow-style hotels.  Hotels and resorts are scattered along the city's western coastline; divers' hotels are mostly in San Miguel.  The lack of potable water has limited massive development, which is helping protect Cozumel's uniqueness and fragile eco-sysytem.  Island life remains simple.
