Mazatlan

Retirement Living

Mazatlan is one of Mexico's oldest resorts; it began its reputation as a vacation get-away in the 1950s when Cancun and some of the other popular resorts of today were nothing more than strips of undeveloped sand.  Mazatlan remains an affordable destination and retains much of its easy-going charm.  Dining and shopping are excellent, and the city is restoring its historical downtown.  With increased competition from other Mexican resorts, Mazatlan is working hard to improve its appeal. Visitors will find plentiful shopping, an excellent golf course (El Cid) and the city is planting thousands of trees and improving air service.  While Cancun and Ixtapa are the new showy resorts, Mazatlan sticks to the basics of great beaches, good food and plenty of sun.

Fishing is a way of life in Mazatlan; all-day charter boats start at around $250.   The best months are March through December.  For snorkeling and swimming, try Deer Island, Stone Island and Playa Cerritos.  As for beaches, Mazatlan has one of the longest stretches of sand in all of Mexico.  Check out Playa Los Cerritos for an uncrowded experience, Playa Olas Altas for surfing and Playa Norte where local fishermen moor their boats.

Check out the quiet, upscale gated community Estrella del Mar Golf and Beach Resort.  Condos are for sale and the private beach is secluded.
